Project Details
Alban Engineering, Inc. performed this work as a Prime for Anne Arundel County Public Schools. Alban Engineering developed a load analysis for the campus and determined the maximum flow rate and capacity of the central cooling plant. The scope of work included the replacement of two water cooled chillers (525 and 725 tons) piped in series with (2) 800-ton high efficiency variable speed type water cooled chillers. The existing cooling towers were modified to increase capacity from 1,250 tons to 1,600 tons.
Added to the cooling towers were variable speed drives for efficiency, and a condenser water bypass. Piping and controls were also modified. These replacements of water-cooled chillers were done to serve the twelve (12) building campus.
Work also included new variable speed drives for the cooling tower fans, a new condenser water pump, a new cooling tower bypass piping and modification of the existing control sequence for lead-lagging chillers which were piped in a series configuration. Additionally, work included a new refrigerant leak detection and purge ventilation system. The work was in concert with the 2010 central plant system upgrades which was performed under a previous employer. Construction occurred in 2016 and 2017 in a design/bid/build approach.
