Project Quick Facts
- McDaniel College Gill Center
- Type of Project: Renovation/Addition
- Location: Westminster, MD
- Approx. square footage: 11,000 sq. ft. renovation with a 1,000 sq. ft. addition
This project included multiple renovations for the Gill Center at McDaniel College including health/science and training laboratories, a lobby addition, classrooms, and offices within the existing athletic facility. Existing systems were replaced, modified, extended, and supplemented by new systems to support the new and renovated spaces. Construction delivery method was performed by a construction manager at risk (CMR).
Some of the work constructed at the Gill center included the replacement of the existing locker room heating and ventilating unit with new dehumidification heat recovery type air handling unit, which was located outside on a concrete pad and ducted into the existing mechanical equipment room. The replacement of all existing supply, return and exhaust ductwork serving all locker room areas connected to the existing air handling unit. All supply air ductwork was paintable double wall (internally insulated) type. Modification/replacement of the existing plumbing fixtures and connection to existing piping mains – under Add Alternate, and new lighting systems for renovated locker room areas.
The expansion of the existing lobby was served by a new roof mounted packaged direct expansion air handling unit. Duct mounted hot water heating coils provide the necessary heat. The entry vestibule is served by a hot water cabinet unit eater. Heating water is connected to, and extended from the existing heating water distribution system located at the opposite side (south entrance) of the current lobby and/or from the existing mechanical equipment room below.
Approx. 7,700 sq. ft. of the basement of Old Gill was renovated. Air cooled condensing units were provided, along with associated DX cooling coil, piping, and controls from the upper level gym space. Additionally, approx. 1,000 sq. ft. of a lobby addition was added.
All in all, the overall goal was to excavate and renovate the basement of Old Gill, providing new A/C to both the basement and the upper level of the gym, the renovation of the mezzanine (approx. 3,765 sq. ft.) to create teaching/meeting spaces, and the subdivision of the gym into two halves with a folding partition. The finalized construction cost was $908,000.
